Music is constantly evolving and many new genres are conceived and born right here in New York City. The shocking MC that calls himself Cazwell embodies the electrified dance music that has recently come out of the downtown NYC nightlife scene. Think provocative pop with a mix of hip-hop and dance. “When people ask me how to describe my style, sometimes I say, ‘Just imagine if Biggie Smalls ate Donna Summer for Breakfast,’” says Cazwell.
His new Album, Watch My Mouth, combines catchy, goofball hooks with even goofier rhymes. The opening and title track, “Watch My Mouth,” incorporates funky, dance floor sound effects straight out of the 70’s, making this the perfect party album intro. “Tonight,” one of my favorite tracks on the album, of which the hook is sampled from the late 90’s hit “Give Me Tonight” by Shannon, is Cazwell’s version of a love song; in the first verse he promises that by the end of the night he’s going to be your Superman. One of the more raunchy tracks on the album, “All Over Your Face,” has some of the same funky, 70’s feel that is prominent throughout the album. Cazwell holds nothing back on this one, “I’m greasy, grimy, two-timy, butt-sniffin’ animal / and if I want it I get it, I eat that ass like a cannibal.” On the back end of the album we hear a more serious side of Cazwell on the electric sounding, “Knocked Out.” Possibly a message to his anti-fans, he declares, “First and foremost you don’t know me / and if you knew me, you wouldn’t step to me.” The electronic track, “Limousine,” featuring Risque, uses a lot of synthe and exemplifies the diversity of Cazwell’s taste in sounds and beats. He pays homage to his roots in the last track, ”Gettin’ Over,” with a semi-simple beat and typical Cazwell style rhymes; it’s the kind of unadulterated hip-hop Cazwell was raised on.
Watch My Mouth is pure Cazwell. The downtown New York flavor is prominent on this album but it is definitely not like anything you’ve heard before. We think you’ll either like or you’ll love it and, if nothing else, you’ll have a great time partying to it!
