The Brian Jonestown Massacre Have Their Suspicions, But ‘Who Killed Sgt. Pepper?’
When The Replacements released Let it Be, they wanted to defy the convention of the classic standard in rock. They were making a jokingly bold statement that The Beatles were just another good band, and what should keep them from belonging in that upper echelon of rock too? They even considered naming their follow-up album Let it Bleed.
The Brian Jonestown Massacre may not share the same sentiments as The ‘Mats, most likely due to the fact that, unlike Paul Westerberg, Anton Newcombe is not remotely self-aware. Whether that’s good or bad, they’re just a band having fun, and don’t really give a shit about rock’s canon. All you have to do is look at the revolving door of over 40 musicians that have belonged in BJM over their career to make sense of their bombastic album titles, like their latest, Who Killed Sgt. Pepper? BJM would be happy if the same 500 people came to their shows every night.
Regardless, the group has grand aspirations for the new record, having brought back Matt Hollywood to the line-up, and the inclusion of some international musicians to the recording process that took place over most of 2009 in Iceland. This 12th BJM album saw release on February 23, and the band intends to embark on a North American Tour starting in May. So figure out where you can buy some acid in time for these dates:
